CHAPTER 15

Carina

“Wake up, Carina.”

The three little words were hushed, as if a whisper from a ghost. I shifted, feeling warmth and comfort, ignoring the request. Still in a fog, when I stretched, I felt a weight covering me, holding me down. Wait a minute… where was I? As soon as I snapped open my eyes, I gasped, jerking up, fighting whatever was holding me down.

No. No!

I thrashed for a few more seconds until I was able to focus. Then a strange sense of calm swept through me. I wasn’t in the stark, cold room any longer. I’d been placed in his bed, covered with a soft comforter, the goose down pillows nesting me from the rest of the ugly world.

As I took a few deep breaths, I realized I was searching for him. My captor. My husband.

My lover.

He was nowhere to be seen, but he’d been here. I sensed it. No, his scent remained saturated into every piece of material, his fragrance tickling my skin. Tiny prickles appeared on my arms as I thought about him. He was so complex, hating me one minute then craving me the next. But wasn’t that exactly the way I felt about him?

I wanted to despise him but the more time I spent around him, the less possible that seemed.

A single warm glow of light came from the lamp on the dresser. As I glanced around the room, so many feelings rushed into my system from hatred to confusion but mostly, I missed him, an intense ache building inside. As I rolled over, I thought I heard music. As soon as I sat up, I was certain of it.

I noticed a glass on the table near the upholstered chair. He’d remained on guard. What was he most worried about? His need or his fear I’d run away?

Or perhaps it was because of the demons plaguing his every move.

As the music became louder, echoing throughout the house, I was drawn to the haunted melody, the increasing rise in pitch as he pounded the keys. Shivering, I folded my arms, heading to the bathroom in search of a robe, finding one made of thick terrycloth on the back of the door.

While it was at least two sizes too large, the soft material helped soothe the tremors. There was no locked door to keep me hidden away, no guard standing on the other side. I eased into the hallway, taking careful steps toward the stairwell. There was no reason for my heart to be racing, at least not now, but even a single thought of him affected me more than it should.

I carefully made my way down the stairs, still struck by his selection of music. He was a brilliant pianist, the rise and fall of tempo matching the music perfectly. By the time I drifted to the doorway of the music room, I was in awe of how many emotions the gothic piece had pulled to the surface.

Strings of the full moon drifted through the window, cascading an eerie circle of blue across the Steinway’s surface.
